How do I add images to my post? Part 1, using the media library

Sharing photos and images is an important part of many peoples’ blogs. Photos can be informative or funny, they can enhance the layout and design of a post or help clarify an idea. Sometimes photos make up the bulk of the content of a blog.

There are several ways to add image files to your blog post. Rather than writing one long all-encompassing tutorial I will cover them individually. First, adding photos to your media library.

Before you add image files to your media library take note of their file size. Due to server constraints and because we want to continue to provide this service for free there is a 500MB limit to your library. For the same reasons we also have a limit of 2MB per file upload. It may be necessary for you to resize your images. There are many ways to do this – Photoshop, GIMP and IrfanView are probably the most popular image editing tools available. Familiarizing yourself with one of these pieces of software will help you conserve storage space.

Once your images have been edited so they are an appropriate size for the web you can add them to your media library.

Step 1. Under the Media heading in the left menu column of your admin click Add New.

Step 2. Click the button to Select Files.

Step 3. Locate the image or images on your machine and select them to upload.

Step 4. Add or edit the relevant information for your image. Once the information is correct click the button to Save all changes.

Now the image will appear in your media library. From here you can edit, delete or view the image.

Step 5. Open your saved draft or add a new post. Click the link to Add an Image.

Step 6. Select the Media Library tab. Locate the image and click the link to Show. Select your Alignment and Size preferences, then click the link to Insert into Post.

Your image is now in your blog post!
